Seasons greetings to everyone!

I would not let this chance pass by thus, my dear students, let me ask you a question or two:

What is your Christmas wish/es and your New Years resolution?

and

Does history (regardless of subject, e.g. Philippine history or Modern Europe etc) have significance / value outside of academics? Does knowing something about history help any?

Feel free to post your answers either in English and Filipino. Extra credit will be given to those who will participate thus do not forget to state your name and course ( yr. & sec).

Thanks!

First of all, gud afternoon Prof. Hull

My christmas wish is really to have bb phone but it's very impractical to get one these days bcoz of recession instead I just wish Love, Peace and Joy came down on earth on Christmas day. May Christmas spread cheer in our lives!

Next, I really don't make new year's resolution for it only be forgotten when the year goes by but one thing I always keep on mind is to LEARN SOMETHING NEW to that coming year. XD

For the second question, history of course have significance besides a requirement for academics. It teaches us good things in the past that we can continue until the present and warns us on worst things or events we should refrain from doing it at this time. Reasons on everything can be found in history - in politics, economics, society and many others. There is nothing in history that is causeless. The most important thing is lessons have been learned from history whether good or bad which a simple man can apply in his life.

Isang magandang hapon po Prof. Hull.

Christmas season is a very significant occasion that everyone around the world especially we Filipino cause it plays a significant role in our life. It will be more that 10 days before the actual celebration of the Christmas day but excitement already filled my heart.

If I will be ask if what is Christmas wishes i would simply answer happiness. Many disasters had come to our country and change the lifes of our countrymen.

New Years Resolution? Actually if I heard that statemant marami akong naaalala na mga recent resolution ko na hindi naman natutupad. But, to feel the courage of changing, being patient(in all aspect in life especially in studying)and being more obedient in my parents cause recently lagi kong nasasagot ang parents ko at di ko sila minsan sinusunod. I am so stubborn sometimes.

And for my answer to the last question of what is the significance of history subject, I will proudly says that history break bown the boundaries of being ignorant in all aspect of life. History tells us about things that we commonly ignore about life. It reminds us of whop we really are, of what is the impact of becoming a true Filipino citizen in the nation of the Philippines.

An advance Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

A warm greeting of Peace!

Definitely this coming Christmas, I would simply wish and whole-heartedly wish peace and happiness for entire Filipino, justice for those who died in Massacre happened in Maguindanao, fully-recovery for those who stricken by Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng and of course abundant boons for everyone. I would wished these things because I do assumed that Christmas is the day of love, Though it is true that Christmas is celebrated as the day of the Birth of Christ into this world, yet it also symbolizes a very deeply significant truth of the spiritual life. May the good times and treasures of the present become the golden memories of tomorrow. Wish lots of love, joy and happiness for all. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Candidly speaking, I have lots of New Year’s resolution for this forthcoming 2010 but the main highlights of these resolutions are to be more serious in studying and do praising the Omnipotent Almighty every Sunday by going to church because FAITH AMIDST HARDSHIP and I would be what i aims to be if i trust God's hand that lead me in a treasured journey.

For the second question posted on this site, There are lots of significance brought by history to us like by understanding what has occurred in the past and the current circumstances of today, we can better be aware of what can come about in the future. By looking at what has happened, we can understand what we should avoid and what we should make better. Knowing something about history can help people by simply making history as their guide for anything and making history as their pattern in their present lives. Knowing history really brings convenient to everyone.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAVE A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

Happy Holidays Prof. Hull

Yearly, I make a lot of christmas wishes. Both material and non-material wishes. This year, I actually wanted a laptop, new cellphone and a Marc Ecko or DC rubbershoes, but above all this is one very important wish. That wish is for me to graduate this May.

As for my new years resolution, I don't have one. I don't do new years resolutions because I believe that nobody actually works on their resolutions honestly. However, I do believe in short term & long term goals. Also, I just try to live each day as a great learning experience. :)

----------

Yes, history has significance outside academics. It's as simple as saying... Not knowing your history is as good as not knowing yourself at all. Knowing our history helps us in dealing with the present and face what might happen in the future. What we have right know, is a result of what we have in the past. As one environmental principle goes, "Everything is connected with everything else." This does not only apply with the environment, but with history as well.

My New Years resolution is to be more mature and responsible. This past days, It seems like I'm becoming incompetent in everything. And also, most people would just simply use me for their own benefits. (hate it when they do that)

Regarding History, As I study history: our world is big, and it has been a while since human beings were born, but what we know is actually very little.

Living in different countries, speaking different languages, those people who lived in different times. We hardly know anything about them. That's why this is what I do for work/study!

Things about the ancient times, about the ancient countries. I want to learn about them, research about them. And then, I'll announced my result on what I have discovered, because I want to tell someone about those discoveries. Rather than keeping such knowledge to myself.

For me, it's more fun to let everyone know about the subject matter that I chose. Learning history is not just about learning the past life. Its about using those past stories for the right present and for the better future.

I'm a little ambitious at times, especially regarding history. I may not be the best in the class, but my effort is better than anyone around. If you really love something, persue it and have fun with it. You dont need to be the best, you just need to give ur 100% in doing what you love. ;)

Belated Merry Christmas to everyone!!!

I know that it's too late for me to answer the first question but of course all of us wanted a peaceful life in the world.
Yan lang po ang hinihiling ko, and sa aking family naman, good health lang po..Sa kanila lang naman po ko kumukuha kasi ng strength in every challenge of my life.

For the second question, my New Year's Resolution always is be thrifty lang po.

For the last question, of course may significance ang History sa buhay ng bawat tao.
Dahil sa nakaraan, meron tayong nacivilize at modern na present ngayon at maging sa future..
Kaya we should give importance to the past, dahil wala tayo ngayong prsent at future kung wala tayong natutunan at nalalaman sa nakaraan.

Thank you ma'am Hull for the knowledge that given us this year.
Belated Merry Christmas and have a Prosperous New Year to come!!!

To Prof. Hull,

Happy holidays Prof. Hull! I would like to share my answer with your question. Gusto ko pong maging Masaya kami ng aming family within this coming year.

About naman pos a new years resolution ko, gusto ko lang pong maging mas matapang pa at ayaw ko na pong umiyak kaagad sa mga problema na aking kakaharapin . I easily cry when there are something that would happen wrong….at ayon po ang gusto kong baguhin sa darating na taon.

Merry Christmas And happy New Year Ma'am Hull!

My Christmas Wishes are:
to have a healthy body and have a peace of mind always. So that i will avoid being stress and also because I want to perform my responsibilities and obligations well.

My New Year's Resolution is:
I want to avoid being problematic.I will be eager to be cool.

And lastly, History is definitely important because it represents many significant things, such as our culture, our identity, our nations and our lives. It signifies how the society interacts to its people. It is the involvement of each other to our country.

First of all, Belated Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year Prof. Hull

My Christmas wishes are: to have a healthy year for everyone, to pass all my subjects for this semester, to endure all the things I will encounter and lastly a peaceful and successful election. I hope that this year will be a peaceful year to everyone. May there be free from any calamities and tragedies and above all may everyone experience happiness and joy.

Honestly, the first thing that comes to my mind when it comes to New Years Resolution is to have a healthy lifestyle and also to be responsible.

On whether history has its significance or value aside from academics, I think history helps us all. It makes us remind of the peoples effort to fight for it and to preserve it. Without history we could not find the origin of something, something would then came out of nothing and from that, history becomes important because it guides to our conclusion and it makes us appreciate the origin of things.

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone especially Ma'am Hull!!!

May all of us have a very unforgettable and fruitful year!!!

My Christmas wishes are to have new and better things for our house in replacement to our "na-Ondoy" house. Even though it's a rented apartment, my family and i have still lots of memories there and most especially, lots of our things were not recovered so it's gone forever. I'm moving on but not( and finding it difficult) to let go of all the things you cherish and have significance to your life.

My other Christmas and New Year's wish also is to have good health for my family and all my loved ones. They are my treasures so I wish, hope and pray that God would be so kind to us that he will take very good care of them.

My New Year's resolution is...(every year I make and think about this)...to be better in all aspects, may it be studies, family, skills, hobbies, sports and to convince myself to be healthy and lose some weights.

Does history...
for this question, my answer is...

Of course! i believe that history has significance/value outside academics. Sometimes, we wonder why those teachers or professors keep teaching us those things that we don't really think important but the truth is they are teaching us those things for us to learn beyond what they teach. Knowing about history for me is like a precaution, a dos and don't s of life. History teaches us the lessons of the past so that we are not to repeat it. when you know history, may it be a little knowledge, it will still prevent you from doing the same mistake that is if you can relate history to the current happenings in your life or in the world. When you analyzed it, past events and current events for some reason, maybe not precisely, somewhat determine future events. That is only my opinion.

Well, again happy new year!

Merry 2010!!!

My christmas wish is to have a better/clear vision (both literally and connotatively). I hate my eyeglasses and going to optha. I already memorized the snellen chart! I dont want to see the smirk of the doctor, hearing the incorrect letters i've said.

Okay, for my 2010 resolution, there's two:
a.) I'll GO GREEN! This past few days, I've read several articles about the dramatic changes in our climate and in nature. And just to think how fast technology evolve, is contrary to what's happening to our environment. Stop wasting and go practical!
b.) I will continue supporting PINOY products. Eventhough its pricey, all the products are worth buying. Some are even handmade and knowing the fact that the things you're wearing are really Pinoy diba. And this will eventually help the Philippine economy.

Next question, History is significant not only in school purposes but also
as an individual. Every subject and field of study is linked to history. The study of history is a remembrance of people and past events. This explains why some things are as they are today.
For me, history are "collection of what was done". These are guide lines to do our job correctly in the future.

second, my new year's resolution is to be more patient and less moody. :) also, to learn new things this year.

PROSPERITY 2010!!!

What is your Christmas wish/es and your New Years resolution?

These are My Christmas wishes:
>A peaceful and helpful Philippines (No more killings and other types of terrorism attacks, instead love one another)
>A greener and cleaner environment so we can minimize the effects of the global warming and disseminate climate change
>A peaceful, fruitful, prosperous and happy Christmas together with my family, my relatives and my loved ones
>A blessed and stronger relationship in our family from my parents to our youngest brother
>A healthy and more active body
> More full of life in University’s academics and activities
>More lovable, approachable, dynamic and kind professors
>And a very happy and blessed semester =)

However, these are my New Year’s resolutions:
>Love other people by reaching a helping hand to them more than myself
>Be good, gentle, kind, and giving person
>More focus on studies
>Gain more height =)
>And last but not the least, give all to the Glory of God.

Does history (regardless of subject, e.g. Philippine history or Modern Europe etc) have significance / value outside of academics? Does knowing something about history help any?

Anyway, the first thing that entered my mind are the words that I learned from the wisest man ever lived on earth,King Solomon.I can't remember the exact words but I still have the gist,

....WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY HAS ALREADY HAPPENED,IF NOT YESTERDAY,MAYBE YEARS OR THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN OVER AND OVER.

When I learned that I thought,so there is the probability of the MASTERY OF DOING THINGS, especially things that delicately involve our soul, our humanity, our race(as a whole). History, when given careful attention, teaches us the next significant steps in life, decisions that are needed to be made long term or asap, from the hardest decisions like what course to take in a university to the minutest detail of your life...like let's say, uhmm what socks to wear for the day. Every single thing happening the next seconds is a puzzle-piece that fills up the whole,HUUUUGE obra maestra of life.

History is not just a subject that requires a life-size brain for memorization, it's a colorful diary of life's pain, grief, joy, peace, war, music, love and other experiences of the past that we could inquire whenever we face a certain,life-and-death-situation type of a problem. And the more we encounter or review this wonderful diary it gives us the immunity we need to make better response in the latter part.
END.

P.S.
I always only remember the right things(based on what I learned from past experiences) to do when the damage has already been done. I'm a professional PROCRASTINATOR. I'm almost always late to realize things. So I WANT TO MASTER MY OWN DIARY OF LIFE, that's my new year's resolution.
I want protection for all the people I love and know, an electric guitar and a grand piano. (the last wish is more like a fantasy). That's my Christmas wish. ;]

Belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

My Christmas wish is only simple, it is for everyone, especially us Filipinos,to be blessed by peace, prosperity, and contentment so that we may be able to forget the ungrateful things that we've been through this past 2009. Happiness is something often asked to God, but I believe that Contentment is better to be asked from him because Happiness needs not to be asked for it is already laid before us. They're just there, barely noticed by our envious eyes.

For My New Year's Resolution.. we'll I don't really have a New Year's Resolution. I just always remind my self of things like:
-extending my patience(hangga't kaya pa or okay pa, sige lang..)
-don't do or commit to this that may harm my health
-don't say bad words (I guess I don't need to remind myself of this often for I dare not to speak of these words.)
-think before you speak. I like to think before I speak for I dare not to lose a friend when I have said something upsetting or offensive. Thus, trying to see good in everyone helps.

For the the question about history..

History reminds us of origin. It completes our identity. History helps us to learn from our past mistakes and to think of what we should do to create change, and not let bad things happen the way it was before. It is the reason for our current situation.

That would be all.^_^

To Prof. Anna Rose Hull,

Season Greetings!

Merry Christmas and a happy new year Ma’am! If I’m going to ask if what are my Christmas wishes I would gladly answer that I have two. The first one is to have a good health for myself and for my family on this coming year. My second wish is to pass your subject. It sounds funny and practical but that’s is my goal in this coming year. I will do my best to pass this course.

Then my new years resolution: It will be to become more patient in doing anything that I do cause in this past years I easily get irritated of being so impatient. We know that some Filipino are hot blooded and as the same way it happens to me, l liked to extend my temper this coming year cause it affects many things in my everyday living. It might already hurt other peoples feeling so I want it to be removed in this coming year. Then the last one would be to study hard and focus more on my studies to have higher grade in this current and next semesters.

Lastly, on my own opinion the significant of History subject on our life would be that it will be our major and basic basis of what is happening right now and what would be the possible outcome of this certain event. This can help as estimate action of what we are going to do that will result to a better resolution.
Thank you Ma’am.

To Prof. Hull,

Lastly’, about sa significance ng History sa buhay natin, it simply denotes the relevance of the past, present and future events that would likely to happen. It is the one that record important events that covers majority of its span. It is a great basis of the what we call ‘panghuhula” sa mga mangyayari if certain action had taken place.

Salamat po at magandang umaga!

My Christmas wish is not a material thing. All i want is happiness for my family and good health. My New Year's Resolution is to become more responsible especially in my studies.

Studying History is important although its not my major subject. Knowing history, it shapes the way we view the present, and therefore it dictates what answers we offer for existing problems.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL..........

my christmas wish is to have more blessings this year and to the coming years. I also want to have a laptop for my personal use (haha. That's a lot). Much love, peace and respect from all the people too.

for my new year's resolution....
i really don't have because i can't promise to myself that i can keep it all.

one thing is that i should study harder (what???) but i should keep in mind that i should keep my head up and try to have fun while learning.(hahahaha)☺☺☺

for the last question:
history is important to our lives after all, it teaches us to learn more on the aspects of the past. History doesn't only teaches us but also it helps us to change things that should be done in the first place.(I really don't like the sound of my post now, i'm kinda nosebleeding for now).

that's all thanks for the time and have a prosperous 2010!!!!!

..hi mam..

A glorious Christmas and a blessed New year to you your majesty!!!

my Christmas wish for this Christmas is.. that there will be a lot a blessings to come upon those people who lose there hope and encouragement in terms of academics, family and friends, that there will be god like loving care inside there hearts and that there will be no more place for grieve, zeal and self-pity among individuals who felt the same way as everybody does(often times)...

actually.. my personal wish is to have a spiritual breakthrough and financial provision so it wont be difficult for my family to provide a certain cash for my studies...
i also came up with another wish that im gonna find my mr. right one.. hahhaah... so iew.. but actually i just thought that it might be some kind of vague for me cause i cant understand what mr. right one means... hahaaha...

i also pray .. for another cellphone to come... cause i lost my phone... it is being snatch by some warm blooded individual who (maybe) cant resist doing that kind of hell!!!! ouch!!!! it's bad.. god loves that snatcher too...!!! maybe... i just pray for 'em...

Does history (regardless of subject, e.g. Philippine history or Modern Europe etc) have significance / value outside of academics? Does knowing something about history help any?

-definitely YES!!! history gives an outlook of what an individual might became after a certain event... knowing history... kept (for example: us, filipinos) us from looking the situation of the past and let this past fix the unfailing future of every individual of this nation... History serves as an eye of every situation that might come through as we move forward and farther along the road of knowing the technology and improvement of economy as well as the society...

actually History proves me how it is important to look back unto my past in order to figure out.. how this society came up unto this situation... why did the government act this way???, ... how every heroes manage to protect our country against the colonial emperors that holds us into dump and why did these heroes tends to sacrifices there own lives for the nation!!!

.. and this is it!!!

My New year's resolution is "Try to Improve myself to speak in English".

Philippine History is important to our lives it is because it is the beginning of the development and improvement of our lives which we can relate our status now!!! "may kasabihan nga ang hindi marunong tumanaw sa pinanggalingan ay di makapupunta sa paroroonan"

Hello! I'm Jerold Anthony F. Dalmacio of BJ 3-1D, i think, history regardless of its subject, would definitely put a greater value on people's lives. As what an english proverb says that "History repeats itself", for that instance, it would be an advantage for us, that if we could pattern their ways, it will be much better off this time.:)

Rak en rol Prof. Hull!!!

I am Lovelyn M. Quintos from BJ 3-1D.

Since the Christmas Season is over and I really don't have any particular wish that has come true, allow me to raise a sentiment here. I wish that I can finally take the glitz of the Christmas vacation away from my system. I hope I can re-adjust myself to the busy life of a student from the home buddy I had become from that Christmas vacation.

Now, my New Year's resolution has to be the same as what I failed to resolve for the entire 2009 that has quickly expired: No more cramming, more vegetables, less meat, and just to save, save, save...

To answer the main question...

I used to think that history is a some sort of fiction. Or partly that is. I admit that memorization of historical dates and names never become an advantage on my end, thus I have become skeptical about the information I read from history books.

But in becoming a journ student, and in one way or another, becoming a witness, sometimes participant of major events in the country, I have learned that these things happen for a reason. What I see today, and probably what our people saw in the past, are not plain products of their imagination but results of their conducts, be it good or bad.

I believe that the relevance of studying our history transcends beyond its academic face value as the lessons we learn from studying it goes beyond the confines of the classroom.

We study history not for the plain sake of studying it but of becoming aware in our past as we train ourselves in welcoming the future. Studying history is a major leap in educating ourselves about the lessons we can learn from the past. We don't want to repeat the misfortunes and misconducts of our ancestors thus we learn from their mistakes.

History is important.

Hello!!! I'm Sheila M. Pelaez of Bachelor in Journalism (BJ)3-1D.

Since Christmas has come and gone, I won't dare put any of my Christmas wishes in this post for I think it's already too late for it.

When it comes to new year resolution, I don't have one. I don't believe in it.

Last but not the least, History is, of course, a very important aspect of life. It is essential for people to record past events for them to understand what has happened and why it happened so that when they encounter it again, they know what they have to do...

Hello ma'am..

I'm Zephora Jane A. Lingahan from BJ 3-1D..I hope it's not late to greet you a nice xmas and a pleasant new year..Well,it's better late than never..haha!!! (palusot?)

Actually, I only have one wish last Christmas and unfortunately, it didn't go exactly the way i want it to be.

I made a huge mistake before and I was hoping that my parents and my other relatives would forgive me. I guess they've tried to forget what I’ve done but I think there is still a breach between us.

Until now, I’m praying that they will be able to move on and won't hold any grudge against me. By the way, miracles do happen!

I don't really believe that jotting down your New Year’s resolution would make a great difference for this year or for the next few years. If you want something to be changed from your negative attitudes, you must simply do it instead of just promising yourself that you will impose such change. If you really want to be changed, regardless of the season, you will try to be different.

And for the major question, I believe that history is far more important than just being a required subject in the curriculum. Knowing our history is a way of life. We can't be able to step forward to the future without studying our past. Every little thing about our world today boils down to history.

If we're not aware of what has happened in our past, we will definitely be clueless of what will happen in the future. Without history, we will not be able to see what we can still do for the betterment of our society.

Good Day Ma’am.

Last Christmas I wished for a good health for me and my family, relatives, and friends. To overcome the trials that will come to my family for the next year and for more years. I also wished for the continuous shower of blessings in my family.
Another year had come and New Year’s resolution has been made. I promise to have better grades this year and pass all of my subjects. I’ll try my best to be thrifty because we’re starting doing our thesis and I want to support my financial needs personally. I’ll be more prudent in my personal stuffs because last year I lost my two cell phones and a wallet.
For the last question about the significance/value of history outside the academics, all I can say is we can't understand things well if we don't know what was the history of it. It shows that history has a huge part in everything that we do.

'Ika nga nila, nasa puso natin ang Pasko, araw-araw nga talaga ang PAsko.

I'm Augie Monica A. Miclat of BJ III-1D po.

Happy New Year!

Para po sa unang tanong,

May sound like a cliché, but my Christmas wish is, WORLD PEACE!
Really, that was and is my wish.

I don’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions. I believe in making a change but not letting it wait until the New Year comes. If you truly want to change, you don’t have to wait for the roaring of fireworks before you decide to make one. Change should happen when it is needed not when they say you have to make one for it is a new year.

Para naman po sa pangalawang tanong...

Of course history matters. It is very valuable. We can’t live at present if we know nothing about our past. We can neither move forward nor seize the near future if we don’t have a clue on how our history was shaped and what our history really is.

History tells us many things. It shows us that the things we are experiencing today, right here right now is something not so different from what happened then. Through history, we can act upon on things better. After all, who would want to do the same mistake the second time around?

One of Alanis Morissette’s hits has a line which goes like, “We live, we learn.”- and with history, you don’t have to turn back the wheel of time and live in a particular day in the past to actually learn what went on before. Through studying History, it is as if we were already there and if things in the future will happen the same way or almost the same way it did in the past, we can already do things differently making a better world in general.

My Christmas wish was for my 1 year old son to enjoy Christmas even though we don't really celebrate it because of our religion. I'm just so glad it came true. My son recieved plenty of gifts last Christmas though he don't have any godfather or godmother. Truly, Christmas is a time for giving.

My new year resolution is to start saving money. It's hard to do it specially during these times that it's very difficult to earn money and yet it's very easy to spend it but I'll try to save even a little. Another new year resolution that I would like to add is my plan to spend more time with my hubby and son though it is quite impossible as well since I am working and studying at the same time. I guess I'll just start doing that on summer vacation. I just hope I'll pass my subject and graduate this time so that I can already concentrate on my beloved family.

In my opinion, history has significance outside of academics. it helps to know the history. knowing the history affects how we are livng our life in the present and how we will live it in the future. If you know the history, we will likely to know the outcome of something and it will help us decide on what we will do. For example, In Philippine history the people were able to stop Marcos' leadership by exercising people power during the EDSA 1 revolution. Since that proved that exercising people power is a powerful tool to stop bad leadership, we repeated the history by yet doing another EDSA revolution known as EDSA 2.
