PUP Launches Rizal@150, History Dept. Holds Various Activities

French Kim Bernales, PAO Entrance Scholar, PUP News, Volume 8 Issue No. 10 June 16-30, 2011

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) headed by PUP Pres. Dante Guevarra together with the school’s administrative staff and faculty launched Rizal@150 in celebration of Dr. Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday. Conduct of various activities that relate to the theme “Rizal sa Iba’t-Ibang Persona: Haligi ng Bayan sa Makabagong Panahon” was held at the PUP Main Campus from June 27 to July 1.

History Department Chairman Raul Sebastian initiated the said event in coordination with the History Department Professors and PUP-Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Kasaysayan (SMK). The said event started on June 27 by holding a photo exhibit which showcased the performance of PUP Banda Kawayan. The opening ceremony was organized by Prof. Mac- Donald Pascual, Prof. Narciso Cabanilla and PUP-SMK.

Dr. Samuel M. Fernandez, as the event’s keynote speaker, talked about: “Si Rizal at ang Masonerya.” He shared the part of Rizal’s life when he joined the fraternity.

Meanwhile, various films were shown at the Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center, namely: Mga dokumentaryo hinggil sa buhay ni Rizal; Bayaning Third World; Jose Rizal; Rizal sa Dapitan; and Noli Me Tangere. The film showing was sponsored by GMA 7 network films headed by Ms. Marilou Diaz-Abaya. The five films tackled Rizal’s childhood, relationships, trials that he surpassed and his fight against Spanish regime through the power of his writings.

Acting Supreme Commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal Sir Reghis Romero, II awarded Mr. Cesar Montano the Distinction Service Medallion during the film showing. An Order of the Knights of Rizal with a rank of KCR or Knight Commander of Rizal, Mr. Montano graced the event’s open-forum where PUP students grabbed the chance to ask the actor about Rizal and the film. Mr. Montano and Mr. Romero served as the honorary guests of the event.

Moreover, different contests which measured the student’s knowledge about Rizal were conducted: essay writing, quiz bee and pagkatha at pagkanta ng awit. These contests were organized by Prof. Ma. Rhodora Agustin, Prof. Joanna Marie Liao and Prof. Marlon Agoy-agoy.

To develop students’ thinking and speaking skills, oratorical speech, academic debate, monologue and speech choir were facilitated by Prof. Cabanilla, Prof. Liao, and Prof. Agustin.

Reflect on PNoy's SONA. Do you see any truth to his address? Which among the points he mentioned you think is worth noting?

If you were given a - two minute privileged talk, what would be your advice to President Noynoy / Aquino Government? If you could ask him one question, what would it be?
